NEWSFLASH: YOU DON’T KILL THE EGO

You don’t kill the ego, because to kill the ego means to kill your human self. Over the years, I’ve heard so many in spiritual and new age communities assert, with great conviction, that the only way to achieve enlightenment is to kill their ego. These people fail to realise, however, that without the ego, you couldn’t exist as an individual; also, one’s sense of individuality goes far beyond the limited confines of the physical plane…

The Vedic teachings are some of the oldest in the world, some believe that they go back as far as Atlantis. In these texts, and also the Bhagavad-Gita and Upanishads, which summarise the four Vedas in their totality─they speak of the three worlds

“Trailokya (Sanskrit: त्रैलोक्य; Pali: tiloka, Wyliekhams gsum ; Chinese: 三界) has been translated as “three worlds,” “three spheres,” “three planes of existence,” “three realms” and “three regions.” These three worlds are identified in Hinduism and appear in early Buddhist texts.”

─Wikipedia

These three worlds, according to Paramahansa Yogananda are the physical, astral and causal (mental) planes. On each plane, we have a corresponding body which gives us our individuality. The most subtle body of the three is the mental body or mind, which provides the pure essence of the soul with a limited framework so it can have countless experiences throughout the three spheres of creation.

Notice how the bodies and planes of existence correlate exactly? The physical body and the physical plane, astral body, astral realm and the mental body and causal plane. What people do not understand is that everything in their reality is their ego─the space/time framework itself is the ego, as it provides us with an experience of linearity, which enables us to go through a process of change and remembrance of our innate divinity. The soul is perpetually in a timeless state, but where there is no time, there is no change or growth─we need to ego to exist, period.

Many, including some of the most popular spiritual teachers in the world, define the negative voice between their ears as their ego; they correlate their conditioning with their individuality. But, if people are conditioned to fit in with society by adopting the same beliefs, perspectives and tendencies as everyone else then that’s the complete opposite of individuality. All too often, people lose their true self by immersing themselves in the stream of society only to realise that they’re not being who they are; but who everyone else thinks they should be.

“Most of the things we believe about ourselves and the world around us are false notions we’ve bought into via our interactions with others. Such conformity is the opposite of individuality, yet many define our conditioning as our ego; do see the contradiction? The true ego has nothing to do with who other people believe we should be.”

─The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

The conditionings that have been impressed upon the ego as a result of your experiences in the world isn’t the ego per se, but simply the beliefs and behaviours one has installed into their mind.

In the picture above, we see a wonderful illustration of what I’m attempting to articulate. The true ego is a blank canvas or in this case, a blank house. You get to decide what colour you’ll paint it, which door you’ll have, what kind of fence and so on.

Our true self isn’t a person, but consciousness. In this cosmic drama, we’re playing the role of a human being. If you’ve incarnated as a human (which I’m sure you have if you’re reading this), beyond this reality in the more subtle astral realm, you’ll still be you─a person, with a spark of individuality no other being in existence, is capable of replicating, in your astral body, which is another ego.

Just as no two snowflakes are identical, so too is every sentient being in the universe dowered with individuality. No one is capable of being you, and that is your power so embrace it. Why would you want to kill that aspect of yourself? Your true personality is divine. ‘Spiritual’ people desiring the kill their ego are being fooled by the belief that they can’t be a soul and a person─simultaneously. That is what life is all about; finding that balance, having a foot in each world─and taking both by storm.

“At the most fundamental level of our beings, we’re all projections of the same consciousness; we are one, in this sense. The ego exists for a divine purpose. Let’s accept our oneness as a fact so we can thrive in our God-given individuality simultaneously. We have our individuality for a reason: without it, we wouldn’t exist, period.”

─The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

The Hindu God Krishna is often depicted playing the flute, which is representative of the human spine and its seven chakras or energy centres. The divine wishes to express itself through each and every one of us in a unique way; becoming homogenous isn’t the point of having a human life. The source has a song to play in this uni-verse that it can only play through you─don’t deprive the world of that song.

Even when you’re in the state of no-self, by embracing the present moment in its totality, you go beyond the personality and become nothing but awareness, however, that awareness is still perceiving life through the physical senses. In the state of oneness, you still have an individual focus.

Your individual focus is your ego─you’ll always appear as separate from others and perceive the reality in front of you, whether its physical or astral, through a set of eyes. Refining your ego by dissecting the unconscious beliefs and behaviours that aren’t aligned with your true self is the purpose of the spiritual journey. When you let go of what you’re not, you can more easily embody who or what you’ve always been.

The voice in your head isn’t your true ego, it’s who you’ve been told to be by other people since the moment you shot out the womb. When you believe in the lies between your ears, then you’re allowing them to define you. However, if you master the art of watching your thoughts without allowing them to trigger you, then you’re on the path of discovering the true you, not only as a soul but as a person too.

When I look back throughout history at some of the most influential people who have walked the Earth, such as Christ, Buddha, Krishna, Beethoven, Mozart, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Bruce Lee or John Lennon─every single one of these people had a strong personality that was able to rouse the divinity within others and inspire them. They fully accepted themselves as a person and their lives reflected that acceptance.

“Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.”

─Oscar Wilde

So, contrary to popular belief, you can know the truth of oneness while simultaneously thriving in your individuality. In fact─there’s no other way to live a happy life. Human beings are social creatures─a collective consciousness. We are not meant to live or spend most of our time alone, but together, with our family and friends, embracing life in its entirety.

The collective resembles a jigsaw puzzle, with each piece representing a person. You’ve been created by the source as a specific shape and size─this is your true self. However, if you’re being someone you’re not by allowing other’s opinions to form the basis of your identity then you won’t fit into the big picture. By believing your fitting in, you’re actually ostracising yourself from the collective consciousness. Again, people believe their conditioning (who they’ve been told to be by others) is their ego but its the complete opposite. You can only fit in with the collective by shunning those lies and expressing your soul qualities through an untarnished ego, which is divine.

The soul, in a sense, is the ego if you think about it. If your consciousness is one with all that is, then the concept of an individualised soul is illusory─the ego is that illusion. Not all illusions are negative; this one is a necessary component to have an individual experience, whether, physical, astral or causal.

As you saw in the illustration above, the decorations on the house aren’t the house. Once you become truly present and mindful of what you’re doing, the canvas of the ego turns blank again. I touch on this in my book:

“Lao Tzu said the universe surrenders to the mind that’s still for this reason; the canvas of physical reality turns blank every time you embody stillness. He understood the neutrality of all circumstances and that we can change how we look at things once we still the winds of madness between our ears. When a challenging situation manifests in your life, retreat into your core and be still. The answers to your questions, the solutions to your challenges are within you. When you know how to access this portable paradise, you’ll come to see just how inwardly free you already are.”

The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

So, embrace your individuality; you have it for a reason. There is nothing, nonspiritual about physical reality because every single atom is made from spirit or consciousness. Align with your truth, and strip the colours from your house that don’t represent who you truly are.

THE VAGUS NERVE: EMPATHY HEALS

The largest nerve in our body is the vagus nerve, which means wandering in Latin. This nerve has multiple branches which diverge from two thick stems rooted in the brainstem and cerebellum that reach to the lowest viscera of your intestines, touching the heart and most other organs along the way. Scientists have found, that feeling elevated emotions such as compassion and empathy arouses this nerve, creating higher levels of coherence between all the organs it touches in the process. In a nutshell; feeling empathy for others can heal you.

It is a scientific fact that fear-based states, if overindulged in, breaks the body down and creates disease. When we live via the hormones of stress, we activate the survival gene and the constant arousal of this gene weakens the immune system, depleting our energy in the process. Elevated emotions such as love, on the other hand, the opposite of fear, which compassion, empathy and gratitude are a byproduct, restores and repairs the body.

Take a look at the map of the energy centres in the spine below. Each chakra is related to a gland in the endocrine system and has an intelligence of its own. Our energy is constantly moving up and down our spine depending on our state of being. For example, when you feel love, compassion and empathy, you’re operating from your centre, which is the heart chakra. When you express that love via your words, then you’ve moved up into the throat chakra, directly linked to the way we communicate with others and Mercury (the planet of communication and perception in Astrology).

chakra-yantras-314x400

Conversely, when you live from the lower three centres, which are the survival centres, you deplete your energy. As a result of your low energy, you’re only going to create more of the same, which means your subconscious programs, habits take you over because you don’t have enough energy to create anything new. To create something new in your life, you need to maintain an elevated state of being. The lowest three energy centres represent fear, survival, our sexual nature (propagation of the species), eating and digestion (which also depletes our energy) and so on.

When people are stressed, they’re more likely to act out of habit. To feel secure from the threats you believe are outside you, then it’s safer to do what feels familiar. This survival mechanism is why change is difficult for most because the moment they embrace the unknown and step out of their comfort zone, their brain allures them to falling back into the familiar.

“Many struggle with their habits because they lack motivation. Even though they say they genuinely want change, they don’t seem to want it enough. I know change can be difficult and even scary at times because to change, one must step outside the comfort zone of their familiar feelings to embrace the unknown. The option of reverting into the same patterns, into the comfort zone is always there, but let me tell you that life truly begins where your comfort zone ends.

─The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

Now that you see how living from the three lower centres depletes your energy let’s discuss how living from your heart centre repairs your body.

Compassion is fundamental to any spiritual outlook on life. Without the steady foundation of empathy and compassion, one is not going to get very far on their journey. In a compassionate state, there’s no room for racism, homophobia, nationalism, segregation. You can’t express kindness for one set of people and shun another because they’re skin is a different colour, or they’re sexually attracted to the same gender. Empathy is an all-encompassing state; it has no object; instead, it is the glue that binds us as one cosmic family, united by consciousness.

“Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.”

– Albert Einstein

When we live from our centre and express our appreciation and compassion through our actions, we trigger the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to begin to restore our body. Dr Joe Dispenza said that feeling gratitude for just ten minutes triggers over 1300 chemicals in the limbic brain that restores and repairs the body. Higher vibrational states also strengthen the immune system. Have you noticed that people who laugh alot, are naturally kind and easy-going rarely get sick?

Forms of bacteria don’t make us sick; they are known as opportunistic bacteria because they wait until the hormones of stress compromise our immune system. We permit them to attack us when we live in fear-based states. If one is living from their centre the majority of the day, however, and the vagus nerve is creating that coherence throughout the heart, the brain and other organs then we’re more likely to be immune to them.

Many in spiritual communities believe they always need protection from something─some spirit, demon, an energy vampire, or what have you. They don’t understand, though, that the belief they need to be protected is a fear-based state of being. If you believe you need protection, then the universe aligns you with forces you in which you require protection. The best form of protection out there is to live from your centre with love at your core. Nothing of a lower vibration can touch you if you’re in an elevated state.

In this day and age, such division exists between nations and continents due to the limiting beliefs in the various religious, political systems and the media reinforcing the division via movies and the news channels. Be a shining light in a very dark world; go beyond the surface differences you perceive with your senses; attune yourself with the aspect of your nature you share with every form of life on this planet and in the entire cosmos; your consciousness.

“Christ taught that we should love our neighbours as ourselves; this is because our neighbour is our self. We are one consciousness, the same spirit occupying different bodies. The separation we perceive with our five senses is strong, but still an illusion fundamentally.”

Lynne McTaggart, author of the book The Power of Eight, is the founder of the intention masterclass group. She connects and trains groups of individuals from around the world in the art of sending their intentions to places where war is predominant and where healing is desperately needed. McTaggart has found, via her intention experiments that the act of sending healing and loving intentions in groups of at least eight people not only heals those targeted by the group, but it has a transformative effect on the senders’ lives as well!

“The outcome of both the groups and the experiments, amazing though they were, paled in comparison to what was happening to the participants. The most powerful effect of group intention, an effect overlooked by virtually every popular book on the subject, was on the intenders themselves.”

– Lynne McTaggart, The Power of Eight

As Lynne and others are finding, the best way to heal yourself is to enter the state of self-forgetfulness and focus on loving others. When you become no-thing, you merge with all that is.

REWRITING THE SUBCONSCIOUS

Rewriting the subconscious is something most struggle with, mainly because they don’t truly understand how it functions. The subconscious operates very much like the hard drive in your computer; it is programmed via the repetition of certain experiences and behaviours. However, the subconscious is hundreds of times more powerful than the conscious mind and until you do the inner work to become conscious of what’s inside of it, then it will continue to control your life.

According to Dr Joe Dispenza, by the time we reach 35 years old, 95% of who we are as a personality is controlled by our subconscious mind. This means the conscious mind only has 5% of your energy to work with each day. This is why just thinking positive thoughts doesn’t work for most people, as their emotional state often contradicts their thoughts. To rewrite the programming of your subconscious, you have to change your emotional state on a consistent basis, not just your thinking.

Your state of being consists of how you act, think, feel, and believe to be most true, at any given moment. Our beliefs are the foundation of all our behaviour. Perception is power; it is essentially the blueprint for our personality and physical reality experience as a whole.

“Your personality creates your personal reality.”

─Dr Joe Dispenza

Your current life is a reflection of the energy you put out on a consistent basis. The external world, for the most part, is a mirror of your internal state. What you experience is your subconscious programming made manifest into form.

Defining your mental and emotional patterns as a program can help you more easily make the changes you desire. When you realise that most of your automatic thoughts and emotional reactions aren’t personal but habitual, then you won’t take them personally. You’ll begin to observe them impartially, separating yourself from them. The moment you observe a thought without allowing it to define you is when you liberate your consciousness from it. This is known by neuroscientists as Metacognition; you prune synaptic connections in the brain when you no longer believe in them.

According to neuroscience, the average person has around 80,000 thoughts per day and 90% of those thoughts are the same thoughts they had the day before. When one becomes conscious and lives in the meditative state for some portion of their day then the number of thoughts decreases as they embody inner stillness. The conscious management of your state of being is one of the keys to rewriting the program in your subconscious.

If you have fear-based beliefs hijacking your perception then you’ll attract, not only circumstances reflective of those beliefs but also signs and synchronicities as well. Responding differently to these signs which try and reinforce your conditioning is key to going beyond being defined by the program. I touch on this in my book, The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind.

“Every time you respond differently to a circumstance or synchronicity attempting to reinforce an old belief; you’re dissolving the old self. Repetition rewires the subconscious; the more you react correctly to these illusions, the quicker you’ll dissolve your unconscious associations with them. Also, please remember to stay light-hearted throughout this process; it’s simply a game you’re playing with yourself. When you reach the point where you can laugh at the synchronicities trying to reinforce your old self, you’re on your way to blessedness.”

─The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

The majority of these programs were installed into your brain during the first seven years of your life. This is because the brain is in theta brainwaves during our first seven years, which are literally hypnotic. By observing our parents and siblings, watching the way they reacted, responded and behaved programmed us to mimic them.

One way of getting into the operating system of the subconscious and changing the blueprint is meditation and visualisation. I have a blog on mental rehearsal on my site, click here to read.

The state between sleep and waking is where the magic happens; in that state, you enter the quantum field; that timeless domain where all potential realities exist. If you’re capable of imagining another version of yourself or an experience you wish to have then what you’re imagining already exists in some reality in space-time. All you have to do is change your energy (your state of being) to match that reality and eventually, the outer world will bend to the changes you’ve made within yourself.

Here is another technique that’s also in my book. Neville Goddard, the Christian mystic who taught the Law of Attraction in the United States during the mid-twentieth century, often taught this to his students.

“As you lay in bed at night, before you sleep, lay flat on your back, and close your eyes. Now, can you imagine how you would feel if you were already free of the habit? How would you feel if you were the version of yourself you desire to be? What is their state of being? Can you attune to it? Remember, that linear time is an illusion; all versions of you already exist. Embody the state; feel what it would be like to be the person you prefer; think the thoughts you’d be thinking if you were that version. Imagine a friend, visualise them before you; converse with them in your imagination, hear their voice. Tell them that you used to have the habit and that you’ve overcome it, and that you’ll never go back to it again. Imagine them congratulating you; shake their hand, hug them, smell their hair as they embrace you. Visualise what would happen in the outer world if you were to become that version of yourself.

Fall asleep in the feeling of freedom and do it every night until you are. If you desire to be free of illegal substances, alcohol, pornography, or anything else you feel isn’t aligned with your integrity, fall asleep as that version of yourself. When you’re in bed in that lucid state between sleep and waking where you get beyond yourself, you’re in the domain of the Quantum Field. If you persist in falling asleep in the assumption of freedom, it eventually rewires the subconscious; thus, your beliefs and motivations automatically change.”

─The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

You can’t change your ego with the ego: or in other words, you can’t fix the subconscious with the limited 5% of the conscious mind. Consciousness is required and consciousness means self-awareness; be conscious of the thoughts, beliefs, emotions and habits which no longer serve you and modify them.

Once you change your energy on a consistent basis then your life will shift to reflect your new state. Make gratitude your heartbeat and appreciation your breath. Joy is your natural state, once you truly know this you’ll make the effort to embody it.

NEUROPLASTICITY: DISSOLVING THE OLD SELF

For the most part, the human brain is a record of the past. All our past experiences, memories, beliefs, unconscious perceptions and habits are stored within the circuitry of our brain. The neurological network is a matrix formed by clusters of nerve cells. Many believe that once they’re set in their ways, that it’s, at the very least, extremely challenging to break free of their redundant habits─or, so they thought, thanks to the latest findings in neuroplasticity.

Thanks to the latest advancements in technology, we now possess the ability to scan the brain and the body while people are in altered states of consciousness invoked by spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation. We also know that nerve cells that no longer fire together, no longer wire together, which means that if you cease doing something or thinking a certain way, the pathways in the brain concerning that tendency begin to dissolve.

As an example, imagine you were chased by a stray dog when you were a child and were lucky to get inside your home before it bit you. Due to the experience, you develop a phobia of dogs. You’re programmed to believe they pose a threat to your survival. As a result, there will be a cluster of nerve cells in your brain representative of the memory and thoughts associated with the experience.

Now, I know it’s easier said than done, but if you defy your fears, by slowly beginning to interact with dogs again, you’ll start to break apart that cluster of nerve cells that pertain to the phobia. New synaptic connections will emerge in the brain as a result of you changing your belief that all dogs are a threat when in fact, if brought up correctly, most dogs are loving, loyal and caring creatures.

When you respond to circumstances which usually trigger you into fear-based states of being differently, then you also prune their synaptic connections in your brain. Neuroscientists know this process as Metacognition.

Metacognition is the conscious observation of yourself─your habits, mental and emotional patterns, reactions and desires so you can begin to have more control over your responses to external stimuli. Consciousness or self-awareness is the first step to freedom as you can’t change something you don’t see. You must light a match in a dark place to become aware of the old self.

Living a meditative life means being mindful throughout your day with everything you do─whether you’re walking the dog, washing the dishes or stargazing; the act of living immersed in the still waters of the here and now dissolves the old self. When you embrace the present as it is, and hit that sweet spot of the eternal now, you go beyond what you always believed or imagined was yourself. What many think is their personality is just a jumble of thoughts, emotions, beliefs, habits, likes and dislikes that stem from their past. The true self can only be embraced when one is no longer defined by what they imagine to be their past, however.

“Meditation has also been scientifically proven to untangle the nerve cells in the brain that form the old self. Monks and Nuns have had their brains scanned by neuroscientists as they sat in altered states of consciousness invoked by transcendental meditation, prayer and other practices, and the scientists were amazed at what they beheld. Their frontal lobes lit up as brightly as the sun. They were experiencing levels of bliss, peace, and happiness the researchers hadn’t witnessed before. Meditation invokes a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity, which is the untangling of the nerve cells or hardwiring in the brain, to make space for new synaptic connections to emerge, which promotes conscious change. Meditation, in this sense, is a fire that burns away the old self.”

─The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

The true self isn’t defined by the past as consciousness is transcendent of space and time. Have you noticed that while you’re doing something you genuinely love, that you’re effortlessly thrust into the present moment? Many people call forms of art or writing self-escapism, for example, as they help one become free of their old self, but I don’t agree as the old self was never their true self in the first place! When you drop what you always believed was you can you fully embrace what is!

The present moment is akin to a fire that burns away the neuropathways in the brain that pertain to your conditioning. Making an effort to connect with the present throughout your day, which includes embracing the unknown as the here and now and the unknown are synonymous, will miraculously transform your life. We have the science now to back it up; it isn’t just a bunch of new age, spiritual philosophy─it is grounded in substantial evidence, we’re living in exciting times, for sure!

Science, in a sense, is only just catching up to the wisdom traditions that have been around since time immemorial. I believe that the Bhagavad-Gita, for example, came from a higher age of consciousness where we were more connected to our divine self and the universe as a whole than we are in this day and age:

“All karma or effects of actions are completely burned away from the liberated being who, free from attachment, with his mind enveloped in wisdom (the higher self), performs the true spiritual fire rite.”

– The Bhagavad-Gita 4:23

These timeless truths will never go away, but we’re only as good as our ability to execute and embrace them. Transformation is possible for everyone, and it is much easier than we’re told to believe it is. Drop the belief that change is difficult as the idea will only make the challenge even more complicated than it is; thus, you’ll defeat yourself before you even begin. When you start to untangle yourself from the neurological webs of the illusion of the past, you can embrace the here and now with a set of crystal clear windows of perception! Tranquillity begets clarity.

CHANGING BRAINWAVE STATES

Neuroscience has taken huge strides over the last couple of decades, especially in its studies on altered states of consciousness invoked by spiritual practices such as meditation and prayer. One thing scientists have discovered is that by focusing your awareness on the space around your body, you change your brainwaves by slowing them down. Doing this brings the brain and body into back coherence─into balance.

Ever been stargazing? The stars often make me feel at peace, at ease, no matter what kind of day I’ve had, and recently, I’ve realised why…

When you enter your living room, what’s the first thing you notice? Probably the couch, the coffee table, the television or maybe even the pictures on the wall. It’s natural for us to focus on the objects we perceive with our senses. But, what allows those objects to be? What gives them the platform to exist?

Space! The Final Frontier! These are the voyages─joking, let’s carry on.

Space isn’t empty; it’s brimming with energy and information that is around us at all times. Nikola Tesla, who’s highly regarded as one of the greatest scientists of the last century, said that space is filled with a primary substance, the essence of all things, which he labelled as prana or life-force energy. Atoms themselves are 99.9% space. This space is ultimately consciousness─the fabric of existence.

Convergent focus vs Divergent focus

There are two ways to focus our awareness. A convergent focus is when we narrow our attention on objects in the outer world or on a thought or emotion within ourselves. As a result of such a narrow focus, we live in separation from our timeless self as the smokescreen of linear time eclipses our awareness. A divergent focus, however, is an opening up of one’s awareness on the space around themselves, such as the room they’re occupying, for example.

Neuroscientists have discovered that when we’re living through stress response that we focus on the cause of what triggered us into survival (a convergent focus). Our brainwaves speed up into high-beta, and we get trapped in negative, fear-based thinking and feeling loops because we believe we’re in danger. When one sits down amidst the turbulent emotions they feel and focus their attention on the space around their body and in the room around them (a divergent focus), they slow their brainwaves down. As a result, they change their state of being and move back into alignment.

In laymen’s terms; you can change your state of being and switch off the stress response by focusing on the space around you.

Let’s go stargazing again. As you gaze at those radiant crystals shimmering in the sky, you hone in on the space between you and the stars which slows your brainwaves down. As you calm the electrical storm between your ears, you feel at peace, at ease within yourself. Stargazing changes your state of being and calms the stress response if you’re truly present as you do it.

“The Unmanifested is not only present in this world as silence; it also pervades the entire physical universe as space─from within and without. This is just as easy to miss as silence. Everyone pays attention to the things in space, but who pays attention to space itself?”

─Eckhart Tolle: The Power of Now

If during meditation one experiences, even if just for a few seconds, stillness, they’re tapping into space within their bodies. When they focus on the space without, they align with the space within. This is because the inner and outer worlds are fundamentally the same─stillness is space in the inner universe.

Learning how to broaden your focus, and making the practice routine enables you to maintain the state of being you prefer throughout your day. Stillness is your essence, your core-self. Living in this essence is the key to discovering joy, peace and happiness independent of outer circumstances.

A consistent practice of meditation is essential in this day and age. Not only does it align us with the space within and around us, but it gives us a place to rest amidst the turbulence of everything happening around us in today’s world. Meditation wraps us in a protective bubble, so situations don’t disturb us. In my book, The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the maze of your Mind, I touch on this:

“The purpose of meditation is to transcend the old self, which enables one to become a conduit for wisdom. Emptiness is meditation; it’s a state of consciousness where one is free of thought and emotion while they’re anchored in stillness. In this state, one transcends the illusion of linear time, and the fear-based grip the old self has on their consciousness. All the lies, tricks and illusions of the mind are seen through instantly when the sun of pure consciousness rises within oneself. Meditation invokes clarity and the reinforcement of who you truly are.

─The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

As we awaken more of our true selves, we become aware of the fear-based programs hijacking our consciousness. We realise that our state of consciousness mirrors our perception of the world, and attune to the vast, cosmic intelligence all around us, effortlessly synchronising everything in the manifested universe.

In conclusion, space aligns us with our very own portable paradise. Gaze into the horizon at the beach, watch the sunset or the stars from your balcony at night─learn to consciously switch from a convergent focus to a divergent focus. Most do this without realising, but by making it a conscious practice by focusing on the space around you, you’ll be able to manage your state of being, which can only lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

THE EVIRONMENT SIGNALS YOUR GENES

The enviornment signals your genes but for decades, we’ve taught to believe that genes create disease and that there’s no way of avoiding our so-called, hereditary maladies. We assumed that we’re doomed by our DNA and that there’s no escape. Misconceptions such as these, are being blown out the water by the latest findings in epigenetics. We’re living in exciting times, indeed, as we’re beginning to transcend the false notion of generational curses.

Genes create proteins, which in turn are responsible for the structure and function of our body. When we consistently feel emotions such as compassion and appreciation, our genes respond by creating healthier and stronger proteins that are equal to those emotions. The autonomic nervous system then begins to heal and restore the body. The immune system is also signficantly strengthened when we live positive states.

Conversely, when we live via the hormones of stress, the survival gene signalled by the state utilises all of our life-force energy because it believes that it needs to run, fight or hide to survive. As a result of indulging in the stress response, the proteins created aren’t of good quality because your genes have less energy to work with. This is how the overindulgence in the hormones of stress breaks the body down, creating disease, simply because the body is being fed weaker proteins, which aren’t capable of maintaining the basic functions and structure of the body.

Chronic forms of stress and anxiety break the body down due to the maladaptive inner environment they generate over time. Being conscious of one’s emotional state is the first step one must take if they prefer to live a life, full of joy, vibrant health and wellbeing.

A bit of realism is needed here, of course, as it’s impossible to feel joy all the time. Everyone has their triggers, those events, people and circumstances which take them out of their peace and consequently, the present moment. Triggers only pull us out of our natural state due to our unconscious reaction to them. We believe they pose a threat because of the way the mind automatically defines them. All circumstances, no matter how dismal, however, are rendered powerless without our reaction to them. The reason the stress response is called the stress response is that it’s our unconscious response to the environment, which signals the survival gene.

We’re human, we all get startled by life. What matters isn’t the fact that you’re triggered, but how long you choose to dwell in those fear-based emotions. Shortening the refractory periods of negative states is the beginning of the process of starving your blood cells of the addictive neuropeptides released in the brain the moment the survival gene is activated. The more you live in joy and appreciation, the more your body and cells can respond positively to the new, inner environment you’re feeding them. Your body can be an inferno of hellish, tumultuous emotions or a utopia of light, joy and bliss. The choice becomes yours once you become conscious of how to self-regulate your emotional state.

In 2017, I was diagnosed with hypochondria and panic disorder by a therapist because I kept having panic attacks. Losing my best friend of fifteen years, my dog, only compounded things on top of other issues, I was unconsciously suppressing for years. While growing up, Mother called me a hypochondriac and said I was just like her Father, my Grandfather, who struggled with hypochondria himself.

Knowledge is power. When I stumbled across the work of Bruce Lipton, Gregg Braden and Joe Dispenza, everything changed. I realised that it wasn’t my genes creating the condition, but that the unconscious belief that I was a hypochondriac literally signalled my genes to express themselves in the same way as my Grandfather did. The only thing perpetuating the condition was my misaligned perception. What a profound realisation it was to learn that if I change my perception that I can control my inner state!

At first, it was uncomfortable. The moment I became fully conscious of that pattern, it got worse. Maybe that’s why they say; ignorance is bliss? The heart palpitations, sweaty palms, bouts of dizziness, sleepless nights seemed to get worse while I integrated the emotional pain trapped in my body due to believing that I was someone I’m not.

I experienced what some call the dark night of the soul.

I realised, through meditation and shadow work that I had a plethora of fear-based beliefs hijacking my perception perpetuating the condition. Even though it was so painful and uncomfortable for me to stay the same, it felt just as difficult, at first, to leave the familiar and embrace a new set of feelings.

My mind believed I was going to die every day for years. As I look back, I’m thankful for those times, as stars can’t shine at their brightest unless they are encapsulated by darkness. Those so-called, dark days, showed me that I not only yearn to survive but also to thrive

The moment I ceased believing that I’m doomed because of my genes, my perception of myself and the world radically changed for the better. Unconsciously gobbling up those beliefs from my Mother, signalled my genes to function in the same ways as my ancestors; and who knows how long that pattern has been in my family? I’m proud to state that it ends with me─no more! I wouldn’t wish that hell upon anyone!

My book, The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind, is spreading like wildfire. I wrote it to teach people how to utilise honest methods of introspection and meditation to bring their unconscious programs into consciousness so they can transcend their habitual process and reclaim their energy from the old self:

“Repetition programmes the subconscious mind. You don’t have to think about how to open the refrigerator door, for example, as you’ve done it so many times that it’s become automatic. The subconscious is the habit mind, which isn’t a bad thing in and of itself. It also contains a host of mental and emotional patterns, that have a considerable impact, not only your behaviour but also the kind of people and situations you attract in your life.

The reprogramming of the subconscious becomes a challenge when a person develops a whirlwind of patterns that sabotage their experience of life. This book aims to help them transform these automatic processes.”

The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

Our reaction to the outer world signals our gene expression. All circumstances are neutral until our mind defines them as either beneficial or life-threatening. The conditioned mind often defines situations automatically in a fear-based way because it’s desperate to survive; thus, it believes there’s a threat around every corner because it fears termination. This is no way to live; however, my friends. As I just wrote, you’re here to thrive, not only survive. None of us is getting out of this life alive. We might as well embrace the unknown, go ahead, take the dive!

The outer environment is powerful. The people we spend the most time with shape our personality. If we’re not careful and selective while interacting with others, we may take on certain traits, beliefs and behaviours which don’t benefit us. With this in mind, some good people aren’t necessarily good for you. If you spend too much time around them, their destructive tendencies begin to rub off on you. We all have family members and friends with such traits, and may even have some self-sabotaging habits ourselves.

I’m an open book about my past. I was a drug addict for almost a decade of my life. From the tender age fourteen to twenty-three, I was taking all kinds of substances to run away from myself. Why? Because I couldn’t cope with the emotions of the survival gene I was unknowingly switching on at the time. When my addictions dissolved, (over a decade ago now) I had to come to terms with why I was geared towards them in the first place.

“It is most important to know that sinners or saints are largely made through the company they keep. If a sinner is willing to mend his ways and decides to live in the company of saints, he is bound to change, while a careless spiritual man will deteriorate in the company of wicked people.”

─Paramahansa Yogananda

Even though I’ve overcome the addictions and don’t feel tempted in any way, if I spent time with people doing the drugs in front of me all the time, my genes would (my reaction to my outer environment) express themselves in the same way they did when I was an addict! The result is that my cells would start to crave the drugs once more. Changing your outer environment for the better is tremendously vital for creating a better life. I write from experience and the bottom of my heart.

As Christ once said to his disciples; you can’t put new wine into old wineskins. What he means is you can’t create a new life from an old state of being, and you most certainly can’t if you’re still surrounded by the same people, situations which created your current life. Changes must be made within and without!

Get away from negative influences. Even if you have to leave behind someone you believe is your best friend, they’re most likely only keeping you around to reinforce their own destructive tendencies. I had to leave many of my friends because their substance abuse wasn’t good for me to be around. You can always fall back into negative patterns. Be careful, as the more you advance on the path, the more darkness you’re able to perceive within and around you.

Become more conscious of your patterns and habits. Take an honest look at yourself and see where you’re self-sabotaging. Also, take note of your triggers and shorten your refractory periods by meditating and changing your state of being once you’re triggered. The more you starve the old-self who feeds off your survival gene, the more you’re feeding the ever-new-self who feeds off your thrival gene.

BENEFITS OF MENTAL REHEARSAL

Modern science is finally catching up with what the ancients have been teaching since time immemorial, for example, the impact our thoughts have on our experience of physical reality. One thing researchers are coming to terms with is that, if performed in the correct state, there’s literally no difference in mental visualisation and actual physical experiences─both affect the brain in the same way. The benefits of mental rehearsal then, are countless!

Recently, there was a study done on people who’d never played the piano. The subjects were split into two groups. One were taught one-handed chords for five days by a professional musician─the other meditated for an hour for five days, mentally rehearsing themselves playing the same chords. The results were substansial and amazed the scientists─those who visualised playing the chords could play them as well as those taught by the musician! The experiment, and many like it, confirm the fact that the act of mentally rehearsing in our imagination rewires the circuitry in our brains, priming it ahead of the actual experience.

This process can help one acquire new skill sets at an accelerated rate!

Are there new abilities you wish you had but lack the confidence or motivation to practice? Are there experiences you want to have? Do you desire to make changes to your perception but struggle shaking off the old self? The good news is that if you visualise being the version of yourself, you prefer consistently─you eventually become them.

For example, if you’re an author, get into a meditative state and visualise yourself at a book signing, being congratulated for writing a best-seller. If you desire to start drawing manga or cartoons, visualise yourself drawing and colouring masterpieces. Are there any bad habits you want to drop? Imagine yourself overcoming the temptations whenever they arise in your reality, as temptation never goes away─you can only change the way you respond to them. Do you wish to embody divine qualities like kindness, joy, understanding and compassion? Imagine yourself treating others in such a manner!

“The imagination is just like any other muscle in the body, the more you use it, the stronger it gets.”

─Bob Ross, The Joy of Painting

Utilising the imagination consciously and lovingly is the key to manifesting your dreams. Too many people’s minds are allowed to run on autopilot for the majority of their day─they’re living unconsciously. According to neuroscience, the average person lives in the hormones of stress for around 70% of their day! That’s 70% of your life under the stress response unless you train the imaging faculty.

“Your mind can be your best friend or your worst enemy; it depends on how you use it. In Catholic churches, it is not uncommon to see depictions of the Virgin Mary standing on a serpent in many of the paintings and statues. The serpent is our creative power, and it must be tamed. We must train ourselves to be more disciplined on the mental level; otherwise, we can harm ourselves by creating experiences we don’t want, which is what many in our society individually, and collectively are doing. The unconscious use of the imagination is the reason the world is in the state it is today. We must become masters of our inner world. Indeed, it’s mastery of the word that leads us to emancipation.”

─ The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

During the visualisation process, it’s essential to hold onto the feelings the practice generates. When your dreams crystalise as a tangible reality, you’ll no doubt feel appreciation for life. This is why it’s crucial to feel gratitude in advance for the experiences that have yet to come─linearly speaking. It’s also wise to drop the image you’ve created in your imagination after locking into the state, as the vision of your physical mind pales in comparison to the manifesting power of the higher self.

The visualisation process helps you lock into the state of your fulfilled desire so the universe can bend to that reality. The fruits of your labours are reflected back unto you if you do it consistently─you’ll pull the synchronicities and opportunities to you. Consistency is the key. Make this creative process routine!

“The hardest part about change is not waking up and doing the same thing you did the day before.”

─Dr Joe Dispenza

A morning and evening practice of meditation, gratitude and visualisation, if done consistently, manifests positive changes in your reality. In this day and age, the moment a person opens their eyes, they grab their phone, check their e-mails, Facebook, Instagram─they check into the world while checking out of their dreams. Taking the time to nurture yourself, to set your intentions at the start of each day is essential to realising your dreams.

The only question is; how much do you really want them? Many say they’re passionate about manifesting their dreams, starting a new business, creating a website or writing a book yet their actions don’t match that passion. Life is a lot shorter than you think. Many die without realising their dreams.

Don’t be one of them!

“The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering.”

─Bruce Lee

If you’re reading this blog, then it’s time to start pursuing those dreams you’ve been holding back on. The universe is telling you to get off your ass and start taking charge of your life. Only you can do it; no one can do it for you. You’ve been given the go-ahead in this very moment. The universe WILL support you in your endeavours if you act with passion and integrity.

Now, go and create the life you know you deserve.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE EGO

Life is an experience of transformation. One of shedding who you believed you were in order to embody your true self. The transformation of the ego is why we incarnated in physical reality.

According to neuroscience, most of our conditioning occurs during the first seven years of our lives; this is because children’s brains are significantly more receptive than adults. Theta brain waves (which their brains are locked in) are hypnotic. As a result, children are easily programmed in this state of being. They’re so impressionable that they learn things merely by observing their environment. Due to the unconsciouness prevalent in our society, by the time they become teenagers, there will likely be a cocoon of limiting beliefs obscuring the light of their true self.

Nature is full of symbols that reflect the journey we go through in the rediscovery of our true nature amidst the web of society’s lies if we look at them from the right perspective.

The transformation the caterpillar experiences to become a butterfly, one of nature’s most adored creatures, for example, is comparable to the awakening process many are undergoing.

The caterpillar stage of the insect’s life resembles when we walk the earth without the awareness that there are wings or great potential latent within us; waiting to be realised. Many reading this will likely know how it feels to live below your potential; trapped in patterns (emotional, mental, habitual) you can’t seem to shake off. I lost count of the number of times my conscience ate me alive every time I walked home from a night out with the lads back in the day. I knew I had so much more inside me, but I didn’t know what…

Looking back at that version of myself, I feel nothing but compassion and great appreciation for him. I cherish those caterpillar days because, without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

The contrast those days presented me with enabled me to see the light of my truth. We can only see the stars shine at their brightest when they are surrounded by an endless chasm of darkness; we realize our truth after experiencing what isn’t, first.

After so many disappointments in my young life; allowing my happiness to be dependent on external conditions, I realized that no one or no-thing was ever going to give me the joy that I yearned. Everything in this world is transitory; having a beginning and an end. Many believe they’ll find eternal happiness in the forever fleeting experiences of the cosmic drama, only to hit brick walls thanks to the primrose paths their false beliefs lure them down. When I had this realisation, I decided to become a hermit; this is what’s known as the cocoon or more fitting with this article, the chrysalis phase.

“Most people unknowingly conform to a fear-based worldview; they’ve bought into a plethora of beliefs that unconsciously dictate their lives. These unconscious perceptions convince them to perpetuate behaviours that don’t serve them because everyone around them is doing the same; monkey see, monkey do.”

─The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of your Mind

When the caterpillar begins its metamorphosis, it stops eating, hangs upside down from a twig or a leaf and spins itself a silky chrysalis; within this protective casing, the insect transforms its body, to eventually emerge as a butterfly.

There were many inner demons I had to confront during those times of great solitude. Meditation and bouts of introspection were required for me to become aware of the limiting beliefs sheathed around the core of my true self. These fear-based perceptions convinced me to behave out of alignment with the light of my truth and to fear illogicalities. I realised there was a plethora of limiting beliefs hijacking my perception; they’d been there since I was a child, but I was unaware of them as I roamed the earth as the caterpillar.

We’re incapable of perceiving beyond our current state of consciousness. I was unaware of fear-based beliefs as I lacked the awareness to see them at the time. Many beat themselves up because they lack the awareness to see their self-sabotaging patterns, but I encourage you to go easy on yourself. We’re always shown what we need to know in perfect timing; this includes the lies in our mind which force us to misperceive what’s in front of us.

There were many aha moments when I realised how illogical it was to believe in such limiting and self-defeating ways. Awareness of my unconscious beliefs has freed me more than anything else has. Our post-natal conditioning forms a chrysalis around our consciousness that obstructs our wings from spreading, but there’s another interesting fact about what happens in the chrysalis before the caterpillar emerges as a butterfly that I’d like to share…

Scientists have conducted various studies on caterpillars while they were in their process of transformation. In one test, they purposely broke the chrysalis prematurely while keeping the insect intact, only to discover that by interrupting the natural metamorphosis we inhibit its growth. The struggle the creature undergoes to escape its chrysalis enables it to develop the strength it needs to grow its wings; when we do the work for it, the insect doesn’t reach its full potential.

Sad story, but it’s true and the same can be said for us.

Many are struggling to break free from the chrysalis of society’s lies have been wrapped around their essence since they emerged from the womb. The struggle, however, doesn’t need to be defined negatively. The ups, the downs; the good days, the bad days, the emotional rollercoasters; the challenges are what help us grow. I’m not saying, in any way, shape or form, that we MUST suffer to evolve; but I don’t know one human being who hasn’t suffered so we’re not there as a species yet.

The challenges, the tests, the trials, form your wings. They develop your character, humble you, and break-down what isn’t you so what is can emerge. Try to see everything in life even-mindedly as the Bhagavad-Gita teaches. Go beyond humanity’s definitions of right and wrong. All challenging situations manifest to help you expand and become the butterfly you were created you to be. What you believe is inhibiting you can be a catalyst to help you realise your potential. Trust in the process, allow everything to be, as it is.

Diamonds are adored by human beings and are extremely pricey because of their pristine quality and beauty. Yet, it takes immense pressure in order to create one. Similarly, the pressures and challenges of life can create a diamond out of you if you respond to them with consciousnes. It’s not what happens but what you do with what happens that counts.

One day, you’ll look down at your empty chrysalis, in the transcendental bliss of your natural state, flying in skies of higher vibrations with fluttering wings; thankful for the struggles you experienced as the caterpillar. My wish is that you all learn to use your wings this year; embodying levels of joy, bliss and love you never thought possible. May the love of the divine guide you in all you do.
